William S. Burroughs: A Man Within is a feature-length independent documentary by Chicago Director Yony Leyser, in collaboration with BulletProof Film Inc.

The film features never before seen footage of William S. Burroughs, as well as exclusive interviews with his closest
friends and colleagues including John Waters, Genesis P-Orridge, Laurie Anderson, Peter Weller, David Cronenberg,
Iggy Pop, Gus Van Sant, Sonic Youth, Anne Waldman, George Condo, Hal Willner, James Grauerholz, Amiri Baraka,
Jello Biafra, V. Vale, David Ohle, Wayne Propst, Dr. William Ayers, Diane DiPrima, Donovan, Dean Ripa (the world’s
largest poisonous snake collector), and many others, with narration by actor Peter Weller, and soundtrack by Sonic Youth.

The film investigates the life of legendary beat author and American icon, William S. Burroughs. Born the heir of the
Burroughs’ adding machine estate, he struggled throughout his life with addiction, control systems and self. He was
forced to deal with the tragedy of killing his wife and the repercussions of neglecting his son. His novel, Naked Lunch,
was one of the last books to be banned by the U.S. government. Allen Ginsberg and Norman Mailer testified on behalf
of the book. e courts eventually overturned their decision in 1966, ruling that the book had important social value. It remains one of the most recognized literary works of the 20th century.
William Burroughs was one of the first to cross the dangerous boundaries of queer and drug culture in the 1950s, and write about his experiences. Eventually he was hailed the godfather of the beat generation and influenced artists for generations to come. However, his friends were left wondering, did William ever find happiness? is extremely personal documentary breaks the surface of the troubled and brilliant world of one of the greatest authors of all time.

If Kinemastik blog had many eyes, at least 5 of them would look out for the most bizarre film super heroes. One of them that stays closest to the heart is Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta (September 23, 1917 – February 5, 1984), more widely known as El Santo (the Saint), who was a Mexican Luchador en mascarado (Spanish for masked professional wrestler), film actor, and folk icon.

El Santo, along with Blue Demon & Mil Máscaras, is one of the most famous and iconic of all Mexican luchadores, and has been referred to as one of “the greatest legends in Mexican sports”. His wrestling career spanned nearly five decades, during which he became a folk hero and a symbol of justice for the common man through his appearances in comic books and movies. He is said to have popularized professional wrestling in Mexico just as Rikidozan did in Japan and Hulk Hogan did in the United States. One of his ten children, followed him into wrestling as El Hijo del Santo, or ‘Son of Santo’.

El Santo never removed his mask in the film during his long career and neither did he on any occasion in his public appearances off the film screen. Until…just over a year after his retirement El Santo was a guest on Contrapunto, a Mexican television program and, completely without warning, removed his mask just enough to expose his face, in effect bidding his fans goodbye. It is the only documented case of Santo ever removing his mask in public.

Santo died from a heart attack on February 5, 1984, at 9:40 p.m., just over a week after his Contrapunto TV appearance. As per his wishes, he was buried wearing his famous silver mask. His funeral is considered one of the biggest in Mexican history as fans and friends flocked to see “el Enmascarado de Plata” (the Silver-Masked Man) one last time. After his death a statue of El Santo was erected in his home town of Tulancingo and other statues have been created since then.

Moving east, the first thing that catches the eye is an adaptation of classic phone box with a hero in it who made himself more comfortable than ever. He is an Indian Superman.

In an Indian take on the classic superhero story, a young baby from the doomed planet Krypton is sent to Earth, where he is adopted by an elderly couple in India who name him Shekhar. After growing to an adult and learning about his origins and powers, he goes to the city in search of his school sweetheart, Gita, who has become  a newpaper reporter.

At the same time, Verma, Shekhar’s rival for Gita’s affection in their school days, has gone on to become a crime lord and general super-villain. Verma has hatched at plan to become rich by devastating part of India with natural disasters, then buying up all of the abandoned land in a manner of a true construction magnat. The effects used in this film are as memorable as those seen in Turkish Star Wars, that we ve shown in our film club earlier this year.

Hundreds of thousands have thrilled to the Indian Superman, but fewer have seen the Filipino Batman…

Batman en Robin is a Bat-spoof made in the Philippines in 1993. It stars comedian Joey de Leon and his son Keempee de Leon. The Penguin-character is called Chu-p-a-enguin, which literally means “Blowjob-guin” in Spanglish. There are musical numbers—why not?—and Wonder Woman makes an appearance. A midget Spiderman, too. And check out the Joker!

In the final scene, the cast does a nutty cover version of At The Hop with lyrics like “Let’s be good of blood, Let’s be good of heart, Let’s be afraid of God, Let’s believe in LOVE!”

Mr. Wang is a 3-foot tall Filipino Movie Star, and the main hero “Agent 00″ in the fantastic movie called “For Your Height Only”.

“Mr. Giant has kidnapped the brilliant Dr. Van Kohler and is planning to use the Doctor’s invention, the N-bomb, to hold the world hostage. The only one who can foil Mr. Giant’s evil scheme is Agent 00, a 3-foot-tall Filipino martial arts master, expert marksman, top-class romancer and all-around superspy.

Can Agent 00 rescue Dr. Kohler before it’s too late?

BLITZFILM is not a travelling fair of the German film industry; rather it presents a cineaste spectrum that goes far beyond the commercial field. The main focus of the event lies in current tendencies within film and society, experimental operations within the medium, as well as new nonconformist ways of dealing with cinema. BLITZFILM sees itself as an audience- orientated festival, which is also concerned with encouraging work with the Chinese film scene. BLITZFILM is engaging and distracting. It does not promote stereotypes of German culture.

Rage is a 2009 film directed by Sally Potter, starring Jude Law and Judi Dench. The movie created a new genre in filmmaking, called Naked cinema.

The film is a bitterly funny exposé of the inner lives of individuals working at a New York fashion house – as if shot by a schoolboy on his cellphone camera – over seven days in which an accident on the runway becomes a murder investigation.

Kinemastik and Stagedive Malta have invited ‘Bonnie Prince Billy’ to perform in Malta at Garden of Rest, an old British Cemetery.  It was a great pleasure to host these people and probably one of the most remarkable concerts ever and ever.

Exploding Cinema will be in Malta on Saturday 30th May for a one night only show organised by local NGO
Kinemastik.

Founded 16 years ago in the disused ‘Cooltan’ suntan oil factory in Brixton by a collective of media
outsiders seeking to stage their own screenings of isolated and disenfranchised media, Exploding Cinema
has since screened more than fifteen hundred unfunded films.

Attending an Exploding Cinema event is an unspoken rite of passage to underground cinema. Following in
their tracks, since the early nineties a No Wave of cinema groups has emerged, including, Omsk and Kinokulture the group Films That Make You Go Hmmmm, The Halloween Society and many others.

The EXPLODING is also a key organiser of the VOLCANO!!! Underground Film Festival (1996-2000) an annual event in which most of the London Underground film groups come together for two weeks to stage a London wide multi venue celebration of low/no budget underground film and video.

Exploding Cinema have collaborated with various other international underground film festivals and toured
with other film groups such as Kino Trotter from Belgium and Filmgruppe Chaos from Germany, who also
came to Malta through Kinemastik in 2007.

Exploding Cinema is voluntary and democratic; anyone can contribute and anyone can join. The group is
non-profit making, all work is voluntary, no wages are paid and all the money made is used to run
screenings and to buy collectively owned equipment.
Local NGO Kinemastik will be hosting an event featuring Exploding Cinema on Saturday 30th May at the
Ospizio in Floriana.

Bark Bark Disco will have their debut concert right after the screening followed by DJ Bob and DJ Vinc on decks or something else.

Doors open at 9 pm.
